The United States Senate passed its version of the RESTORE Act, which dedicates 80% of the Clean Water Act fines related to the BP disaster to improving the gulf ecosystem and economy.

The House already passed its version of the plan, which was introduced by Louisiana Representative Steve Scalise.

Next, a compromise committee will resolve any differences in the legislation.

Supporters of the plan say it will ensure that the areas that suffered the most from the BP disaster will receive most of the CWA fines connected to it.
