A car was hit by a train at around 7 a.m. this morning resulting in two fatalities in Edgard in St. John the Baptist Parish.

The two females killed have been identified as Deidre Pierce, 45, and 56-year-old Donna Lumar, both of Edgard. According to officials at the scene. the station wagon they were in was hit by a Union Pacific freight train. Pierce was a teacher at Our Lady of Grace Catholic school in Reserve, according to a St. John Sheriff's Office spokesman.

Also, a 13-year-old boy has been airlifted to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. He was identified as Keith Miller, a student at Our Lady of Grace, the spokesperson said.

The incident happened at 199 Favorite Lane and West 4th Street in a residential neighborhood. All three people were ejected from the vehicle. The car was sent into a ditch about 40 yards away.

Witnesses say they saw the train coming and heard it's whistle blow, but the car did not move off the tracks. Officials don't know if the car stalled out. The train received minor damage and did not derail. It is not known what the box cars were carrying.

St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff's Department and other emergency crews are on the scene.
