Martin Luther King Jr. with the Rev. Andrew Young. Young, who was named executive vice president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1968, was a chief ally and friend to King, taking a major role in the campaigns in Birmingham, Ala.; St. Augustine, Fla.; Selma, Ala.; and Atlanta. Young was with King in Memphis when King was killed in 1968.
