Earl Warren, 14th chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, brought the deeply divided court to a unanimous decision with the 1954 ruling on Brown vs. Board of Education. The ruling overturned the 1896 "separate but equal" decision and banned segregated schools. Throughout the South, billboards were erected: "Impeach Earl Warren."
