Colorado Springs: Waldo Canyon fire destroys 300 homes
As cooler temperatures, rain and cloud cover helped firefighters begin to contain the raging Waldo Canyon fire, a photo showed about 300 homes destroyed in Colorado Springs, local reports said Wednesday night.
Officials have not released the number of homes burned, saying they wanted to notify homeowners first and were still tallying the damage. But the Denver Post published on its website an aerial photo of the Mountain Shadows neighborhood that it said showed approximately 300 homes reduced to rubble.
Ted Stafani learned his house’s fate when he looked at the Post’s front page earlier Wednesday. There was his five-bedroom home fully engulfed.
“It’s a good and bad thing,” he told the paper. “It’s bad because our house is gone. But at least we know.”
The blaze, which has devoured more than 18,000 acres and threatens the Air Force Academy west of Colorado Springs, is 5% contained. More than 32,000 people have been evacuated.
