Teresa Heinz Kerry discharged from hospital after seizure
Teresa Heinz Kerry, wife of U.S. Secretary of State John F. Kerry, was released from a Boston hospital Saturday after being treated for a seizure she suffered at her Nantucket home three weeks ago, a State Department spokesman said.
Heinz Kerry, 74, will continue her treatment at home and is expected to make a full recovery from the July 7 seizure, spokesman Glen Johnson said in a statement.
“I’m extremely grateful for the quality of care Teresa received,” the secretary of State said in the statement. “I’ve always known Massachusetts is blessed to have some of the greatest healthcare in the world, but we’ve just lived it, and are grateful to all.”
Kerry also applauded the State Department Diplomatic Security Service members who first helped his wife when she fell ill. Heinz Kerry was treated first at a Nantucket hospital, transferred to Massachusetts General Hospital and completed her in-patient treatment at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital.
She attributed the “miracle” of her treatment to her caregivers. “They are the kindest people, who love what they do and do it superbly well,” Heinz Kerry said.
Johnson said the family wouldn’t comment further on Heinz Kerry’s health. He previously said doctors had ruled out a heart attack, stroke, or brain tumor as possible causes of the seizure.
Heinz Kerry is heir to the Heinz ketchup fortune, and the widow of former Sen. John Heinz, who died in 1991 when a helicopter collided with a plane over a schoolyard in Merion, Pa. The senator was one of seven people, including two children, killed in the accident.
Heinz Kerry and John Kerry, a longtime senator from Massachusetts and the 2004 Democratic presidential nominee, married in 1995.
She was first treated for breast cancer in December 2009.
Kerry recently made his sixth trip as secretary to the Middle East, culminating in his announcement that Israel and the Palestinians have tentatively agreed to initial talks.
