More shots have been fired in upstate New York as police continued to hunt the man they suspect of fatally shooting four people and wounding two more on Wednesday morning. See tweets and photos below.
The images from Herkimer, N.Y., have been surreal for local residents. Police helicopters, SUVs, armored vehicles and SWAT teams have descended on the town of roughly 7,000 where two people were reported fatally shot at an oil-change business.
Police identified the suspect as Kurt Myers, 64, from Mohawk, where two more people were killed and two others wounded at a barber shop about a mile from the oil-change business. A fire also was reported at a nearby apartment building.
A few hours after the manhunt began, as many as six shots were heard in downtown Herkimer, where local residents reported seeing snipers on the roofs.
A reporter for WIBX radio said that police apparently had surrounded a building on North Main Street in Herkimer and were using a bullhorn to try to communicate; he reported that more shots were heard shortly after.
Residents and journalists could see tactical officers marching behind an armored vehicle rolling down the street and using it as cover, and another local journalist reported seeing police send a robot into a building.
Police cautioned local media from reporting details of ongoing movements, worried that the gunman might be watching the news.
A news conference for details on the event -- which New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, a vocal gun-control proponent -- has been delayed after the new gunshots were reported.
