Psychiatric clinic shooting: 2 dead, 7 hurt in Pittsburgh

Two people were killed and seven others wounded Thursday in a shooting at a psychiatric clinic in Pittsburgh, officials said. One of the dead is believed to be the gunman.

Amy Dugas, a spokeswoman for the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, said in a phone interview that police had confirmed the number of dead.

The seven people injured were being treated at the hospital, she said. Neither the conditions nor the identities of the injured were immediately available, she said.

The clinic, Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic, is located in Pittsburgh’s Oakland area, a few miles from downtown.

The neighborhood is dominated by major institutions such as the hospital and the clinic, which is affiliated with the medical center. Carnegie Mellon as well as Carlow and Chatham universities have campuses in the neighborhood.

All of the institutions went into lockdown when the first reports of a gunman were broadcast by email and text about 2 p.m. Eastern time. The area was secured within hours.

“An active shooter has been identified at Western Psychiatric Institute. Several injured,” the official alert said. “Possible second actor in Western Psych. Lockdown recommended until further notice. If safe to do so, tell others of this message.”

Officials later said there was no second shooter. Nor was there a hostage situation.

Police and hospital officials planned an evening news conference.
