Adult charges in teen burn case

Three of the five teenagers accused of setting a Deerfield Beach teen on fire will be charged as adults, said the State Attorney's Office in Broward County.

Denver Jarvis and Matthew Bent, both 15, and Jesus Mendez, 16, were charged with one count of second-degree attempted murder in the Oct. 12 attack on Michael Brewer, 15.

Adult charges have not been filed against Steven Shelton, 15, and Jeremy Jarvis, 13, who were released from custody, but prosecutors have not ruled that out.

The five are accused of dousing Brewer with rubbing alcohol and setting him aflame. He had called police days earlier when Bent allegedly tried to steal Brewer's father's bicycle.

Brewer was burned over 65% of his body and is in critical condition at the University of Miami-Jackson Memorial Burn Center in Miami.

Al Qaeda DVDs may be suspect's

Prosecutors asked a federal judge not to grant bail to a Chicago businessman linked to a terrorist plot, saying DVDs linked to Al Qaeda had been found in his home.

Tahawwur Hussain Rana, 48, was charged last month with conspiring to take revenge on a Danish newspaper for publishing unflattering cartoons about the prophet Muhammad.

Prosecutors have alleged that an Oct. 18 search of Rana's home turned up two such DVDs.

The judge could decide Nov. 19 whether to release Rana on bond pending trial.
