  • A gun is a tool. Like any other tool, when used properly and responsibly it is very useful. When used improperly and irresponsibly it is not because the tool is evil. It is because the user needs to be properly trained or, when necessary, removed from open society. The open carry will enable law abiding citizens to have the ability to protect themselves if and when necessary.

  • for the person wondering about being 1000 ft. from a school, if you have a permit its not a violation of federal law

  • I look forward to the day when a presidential candidate, when asked his stand on The Second Ammendmant, steps aside from the podium and pulls back his coat to reveal he is packing Texas Cross Draw style, and asks, "Does this answer your question?" Here is to Frank Vonderah, carpenter and cabinet maker, who kept a .38 revolver in a holster on the steering collum of his car (to protect his tools).

  • Good article. I admire the matter-of-fact attitude which recongizes and encourages the individual right to carry a firearm openly. Kudo's to the author, and it's published by the LA Times, no less. I'm truly impressed!

  • Score one for the legal, responsible gun owner. I'm tired of feeling like a criminal, just by exercising my rights.

  • I see no problem with law abiding citizens carrying guns openly. I do see a problem if a convicted felon carries one at all.

  • Before and after the Civil War many states outlawed the concealed carry of firearms, either to make barroom brawling fairer and safer, or so that racists would know when it was safe to murder abolitionists and free blacks. The courts upheld the restrictions by arguing that as long as open carry was legal the right was not infringed (the law merely regulated the mode of carry). Concealed-carry permits are still treated as privileges, not as rights. I suspect the open carry movement is to re-assert the fact that (in most states) carrying a gun is still a Constitutional right.

  • It doesn't matter what the laws of the state are, criminals are always going to get guns on the black market. They after all are called criminals for a reason. 99.9% of gun owner are good responsible people. Most of us Pray we never have to use it in self defense. I personally would rather shoot a target than a human being. Unfortuneately, not everyone is that decent. There are human predators out there called criminals that have no regard for life or morality.
