Brazil Crocodile Fossil Aids Land-Link Theory
A nearly complete fossilized skeleton of a prehistoric crocodile found in Brazil is similar to some previously found in Madagascar, backing up theories that there were land links between South America and the island about 70 million years ago, researchers said.
In contrast to modern crocodiles that live in or near the water, the newly discovered species, Uberabasuchus terrificus, was a mainly terrestrial animal with rather long and well-developed legs.
Measuring up to 10 feet and weighing about 660 pounds, it was smaller than some existing crocodiles, but probably a more notable predator.
