( Hendrik Schmidt / European Pressphoto Agency / February 9, 2009 ) Librarian Gabriele Kern shows the rediscovered "Myconius" Bible, translated almost 500 years ago by Friedrich Myconius (1490-1546) at the research library in Gotha, Germany. The book, bound in brown calfskin, was printed in Lyon, France, in 1514. Numerous handwritten comments illustrate Myconius' progession from Franciscan monk to Lutheran theologist, making the Bible a precious document of Reformation history. The book will be on display at Gotha's Castle Friedenstein beginning in April. |
