Thursday: Day in photos - Baghdad

A member of the U.S.-backed Neighborhood Patrol Awakening Council stands guard in the Sunni Adhamiya district north of Baghdad. Council members, also known as the Sons of Iraq, or Tribal Awakening, once fought against the U.S., then turned against Al Qaeda. So far, about 100,000 members of the council have been integrated into the security forces but some Iraqi officials are making it clear that they do not intend to include all council members.
