Hundreds of Brazilian riot police occupied one of Sao Paulo’s biggest slums after a night of shootouts and car burnings that saw three police officers shot in street combat with bands of young men.

Youths angry over the police killing of a suspect set vehicles and tires ablaze to blockade the streets of the Paraisopolis slum, Sao Paulo’s public safety department said in a statement. Rioters looted businesses.

Officers invaded the slum firing rubber bullets and lobbing tear gas, leading to overnight clashes.

TV images showed residents cowering in doorways. Police declared the area under control by afternoon but said officers would stay indefinitely.
