Chinese President Hu Jintao, on the first visit to Japan by a Chinese leader in 10 years, called for the Asian giants to improve relations and reportedly offered to lend Tokyo a pair of pandas as a show of goodwill. The 22-year-old giant panda Ling Ling recently died at Tokyo's largest zoo.

Hundreds of demonstrators marched to protest China's control of Tibet, and thousands of riot police officers mobilized.

Hu and Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda hope the visit will take the edge off border disputes and historical animosity. Hu was greeted in a ceremony early today by Emperor Akihito.
