Pope John Paul II
In his years as Pope, John Paul II modernized the Papal role while solidifying some traditional boundaries. He pushed away old boundaries by traveling extensively, preaching peace and reconciliation, and advocating the fall of communism as he preached against Western consumerism. Yet he refused to consider the idea of women as priests and fiercly rallied against contraception, abortion, married priests and stem cell research.
