Renato Dulbecco broke new ground in the study of <a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="HEDAI0000071" title="Viral Diseases and Infections" href="/topic/health/diseases-illnesses/viral-diseases-infections-HEDAI0000071.topic">viruses</a> and <a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="HEDAI0000010" title="Cancer" href="/topic/health/diseases-illnesses/cancer-HEDAI0000010.topic">cancer</a> at Caltech and later was a founding member of the Salk Institute in La Jolla. He won the 1975 <a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="8006070" title="Nobel Prize Awards" href="/topic/arts-culture/nobel-prize-awards-8006070.topic">Nobel Prize</a> in medicine.
