George Lucas hired Ralph McQuarrie to design the characters for "Star Wars." McQuarrie came up with the look of Darth Vader, C-3PO, R2-D2, the stormtroopers and many other characters. His artwork helped persuade 20th Century Fox to green-light the film. He was 82. Full obituary
