William W. Vaughn dies at 78; lawyer defended Dan Rather in '83 slander case

William W. Vaughn, a litigation specialist for four decades at O'Melveny & Myers whose courtroom victories included defending former CBS anchor Dan Rather against slander charges stemming from a "60 Minutes" report, died Jan. 3 at his Pacific Palisades home. He was 78.
