John Joseph Auffant, 89, of Charlevoix, died Tuesday, May 24, 2011, at his home. Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday, May 30, at the Community Reformed Church in Charlevoix, where friends may visit with John's family from 1 p.m. until the time of the service. The Rev. Chip Sauer will officiate, and burial will be in the Undine Cemetery in Hayes Township.
John was born Nov. 2, 1921, in New York City, to John B. and Maria (Millan) Auffant. He served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II. On Oct. 7, 1943, he married Evelyn J. Ramu in New York. They made their home in Irvington, N.Y., where John worked as regional vice president for the National Housing Ministries, providing housing for low income and elderly people. Throughout his life, John has cared a great deal for the elderly and their needs. John and Evelyn began spending summers in Charlevoix in 1984, moving there permanently in 2000.
John was a member of the Community Reformed Church in Charlevoix, and a member of Rotary International in Bridgeport, Conn.
John is survived by his wife Evelyn; children, Dianne A. (John P.) Coolman of Charlevoix, John L. "Jack" (Teri) Auffant of Round Rock, Texas, Ronald James (Gail) Auffant of Hampton, N.H.; grandchildren, Russell Coolman, Christy McKentry, Brian Coolman, Michael, Gabriel, David, Samuel, Elisabeth and Brian Auffant; great-grandchildren, Katherine, Brian Patrick and Connor Coolman, Sofia and Kobe McKentry.
