Richard "Rip" Marszalec, 76, of Larks Lake, died Oct. 19, 2012, at the McLaren Northern Michigan hospital in Petoskey.
Rip was born on Oct. 4, 1936, in Larks Lake, the son of Dominik and Tillie Marszalec and was raised in Larks Lake, graduating from Pellston High School in 1955. After high school, Rip worked for Hotchkiss and Douma for a time before enlisting in the U.S. Army. Rip served as a sergeant in Germany during the Berlin Crisis and was a member of the Army rifle team.
On June 27, 1964, Rip married Pat Sobleski in Petoskey and they made their home in Chicago, Ill., where Rip worked for the Crown Cork and Seal Company. In 1999, Rip retired from the company as a safety and health officer after 36 years of service and he and Pat returned to their home in Larks Lake.
Rip was a dedicated member of the United Steel Workers Union and served as the treasurer for the 12 years prior to his retirement. He was a member of the St. Nicholas Catholic Church, where he served on the pastor council, finance council and helped at the St. Nicholas Cemetery. He was a 45-year member of the Order of the Moose and enjoyed fishing, bowling, snowmobiling and being outside. He loved Polish music and at the age of 12, Rip took up the accordion and played with his father almost every weekend at different venues around the area.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Pat; a son, Joseph (Trish) Marszalec of Chicago, Ill.; three grandchildren, Annie, Dominic and Jillian Marszalec; a brother, Wally Marszalec of Larks Lake, and by a sister, Icele (Frank) Travenner of Cape Coral, Fla., and Larks Lake.
Rip was preceded in death by his parents and by a brother, Edward Marszalec.
A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 23, at the St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Larks Lake. The family will receive friends at the church from 4-8 p.m. today, Monday, Oct. 22, with the Rosary being recited at 7 p.m. Burial will be in St. Nicholas Cemetery.
