  • For billions in the world the crisis is now. Nearly two million children die of preventable water and sanitation related diseases each year-- that's more than AIDS, malaria, and TB combined. Just under one billion people lack access to water and 2.6 billion (four out of ten) don't have a place to relieve themselves- so they go where ever they can, in rivers, by the side of the road, or in plastic bags. I think that it is the responsibility of US water activists, as we rightfully begin to address increasing water and sanitation problems at home, to also bear witness that for billions the house is on fire right now. johnwsauer@hotmail.com

  • Dorothy's brilliant plan needs a champion. Who will step forward and accept the challenge to carry it out?

  • Ok, the thing is mortals are supposed to slow down and enjoy life swinging in hammocks and sipping pina coladas. Keep slugging!

  • What about population growth? WHEN are we going to start talking about the limited carrying capacity of the Southland? What happened to Zero Population Growth? And what about theim pact of a million illegal immigrants? Why has the "p" word been kept in the shadows?

  • Dorothy, Your call for a more effective State Water Board with a sustainable plan is eloquent and sensible. Lets also integrate water and power - California Water and Power - CAwaterandpower.com. A combined water and power ethic, promoting sustainable technologies, policies and practices, makes sense. Water use efficiency has its own merits but to save water saves energy. Greater energy efficiency is its own reward but tackles the problem of climate change and ties back into water scarcity. We first met 25 years ago at a CBE benefit featuring the great Ibsen play, Enemy of the People. You are most decidedly a Friend of the People.

  • What an inspiration you are, Dorothy, and what a beautifully written and brilliant article this is! Being the change you want to see in the world is never easy. You have a long record of being that "change" and we are all better for it! With love and enormous respect- Luann

  • Bless your heart, Dorothy. A well reasoned, rational, and vitally necessary path for us to follow to solve our looming water crisis. You go, girl! Love, Irwin

  • "Californication" ... "preying" for a water solution, but rolling over and playing dead when a Source of million acre feet of fresh water a year is offered for investigation. "Wreckthenation" ... failure to cooperate when the offer is made to lease the unused space in Lake Mead to store a million acre feet of non-tributary water a year to maintain the generation of 2000 megawatts of renewable energy for those already suffering from Californication. Necessity is the Mother of Invention...provided you can overcome Californication. Ray Walker (Retired Water Rights Analyst) waterrdw@yahoo.com
