Why regulate marriage at all?
1.
PEOPLE ARE LOSING THERE HOMES GAS PRICES ARE LEADING US TO A DEPRESSION AND PEOPLE ARE SPLIT DOWN THE MIDDLE ON HOW THIS COUNTRY SHOULD BE RUN AND HYPOCRITS IDOTS BIGOTS ARE WORRYING ABOUT GAY MARRIAGE. DONT YOU HAVE ENOUGH OF YOUR OWN PROBLEMS TO KEEP YOU BUSY. WORRY ABOUT YOUR FAMILY AND WHAT THERE DOING.
2. Wouldn’t “marriage” discriminate against couples that aren’t loving relationships and/or have no sexual contact? There is a case like that in Europe, where two sisters have been left an estate by their father. They're both old, and when one dies, the other will be forced to pay an inheritance tax bill of 40% of her share of the estate. Isn't this unfair on the sisters who aren't married or have sex? Why can't a non-sexual, non marriage partner leave an estate to the other tax free like "married" couples? Replacing "marriage" with a "civil union" for all couples loving or not, I think, is that middle ground that makes both sides happy.
3. With all due respect to gay people and their loving relationships, "Marriage" IS indeed a religious institution. One that has been lodged in our legal system. It is yet one more example of how church and state aren't completely separate, and should be. Calling a gay union "Marriage" is forcing down the throat of many religious devotees an idea that goes strictly against their beliefs, written and practiced. Why MUST a gay union be recognized as a "marriage?" Why must this new definition be forced down people's throats? Instead, why not go the opposite direction? Calling ALL unions civil unions?
4. So is the rationale of denying same sex marriage the assertion that mairriage is for the benefit of procreation and anyone who is known not to be capable should be denied the sanction? I'm infertile. Does that mean my marraige should be annulled? My mother remarried at the age of 51. Does that mean hers is invalid? I don't get it. Like gay couples, my wife and I support our children, neices, nephews, and friends. Like gay couples, we build our community and contribute to its social and economic vibrancy. What is the problem with granting them a wedding license?
5. I say the whole thing needs to be done away with. Mexico demands you have a civil recognition and it is up to you if you want a church marriage. I have been married 4 times!! and I am not alone!!! As far as I am concerned if your church wants to marry you and define marriage that's OK with me but the government should only have it nose in the legal aspects...property ect.
6. These couple’s children, who are bullied, will cope by their wit but most will cope by fighting & feeling hurt. Either scenario is unacceptable when the child was placed in that predicament just to make two persons feel good about them selves. Everyone ignors the secret, private world inside a child’s mind where undeveloped reason & logic are replaced by distorted perceptions, self-doubt, lack of self esteem, lack of trust, emotional withdrawal, fantasies about escaping the taunts & getting even. How can anyone in the name of “love” do that to a child?
7. Nearly every gay & lesbian couple want children, whether by adoption or natural means. If their unions are granted the legal status of "marriage" their quest to have children will become easier & more accepted by society. However, will those children be accepted by their peers? A psychologist's experience is that those children will be dealing with bullying of one sort or another during every school day. “Jimmy’s got two daddys, Jimmy’s got two daddys, Jimmy is a freak, Jimmy is gay”. Everyone knows how innocently cruel school age children can be.
8. Lavy disregards major parts of Davidson's essay. Marriage & dissolution laws do address matters involving dependents--along with other matters that are contractual between 2 adults. Not all heterosexual marriages produce children. Not all of those marriages that produce children are dissolved when their last child reaches the adulthood. In the 1st place marriage is between 2 adults, no matter their genders. Lavy also asserts a point of view as if it is fact, saying "It is all about the natural family." Families are social constructs. They are a product of nature. He confuses norms with nature & ignores the fact that norms vary & change.
9. What percentage of heterosexual sex is for pro-creation? Less than 1% I'd guess.
10. PS Friends - gay people do have children. Fertility is not a criteria for a marriage license under the law anywhere in the US. Post menopausal women are free to marry any man they want to marry.
