Samuel Huntington might have been unpopular with some sections of society but much of what he wrote has been proved correct. The rise of cultural clashes and the word he used faultlines is what we witness now

Except for blacks, descended from slaves, and American Indians, the only unifying factor most Americans have is their dislike of where they and their ancesters came from. Otherwise, Americans glorify youth and youth culture and material success. This is our major export which is undermining all other cultures. That's why the (power elites of the) Arabs hate us and are teaching all the young they can reach to destroy us. In their time - as unfying factors - the British exported education, language, and political culture; the French exported language.

If Anglo-American civilization is the only civilization that ever set out to destroy slavery, then what happened to slavery in every other civilization? Did it just wither up and die of its own accord?

Perhaps the election of Obama represents further enormous costs to anglo-america of destroying slavery, cause he's certainly going to make society pay!

For one to speak so eloquently on the subject of American national identity, bespeaks a deep and abiding knowledge of the current trends and fashions. Mr. Huntington, remains a lone voice in the wilderness of commonality and homogeneity. We need more voices like his to articulate the mass movement of American Identity.
Mr. Huntington, you will be sorely missed.

A pleasant surprise that LA Times would imply understanding the quality and depth of Huntingtons thinking by publishing Mr. Goldbergs Op-ed. Kudos are deserved and I guess we wont be cancelling our subscription after all.

Every civilization had slavery?
I do not think that ancient Hindu civilization had slavery. Slavery was introduced into India by Muslims and even then most Hindus did not participate in slavery.
