1. Figures the land that birthed Nazism would be so concerned with image over substance. So sorry it couldn't be draped in symbolism since we know how far that alone gets you.

3. As an American who just spent a month in Germany last summer, let me assure you that Germans - at least those I came in contact with - do NOT in fact hate Americans. Our current leadership, yes; our foreign policy, yes; Americans, not so much. As to the topic at hand, I agree with those asking for pictures. You can type your 1000 words, but how about something to compare them to???

4. Hey Greg, Are you serious? Have you actually looked at the photos of the place? Looks beautiful to me. Stately but not over done and yes, I'm sure they did have to take into consideration terrorists - unfortunately. So pick on something else - I think the building looks fabulous!

5. I applaud the idea of the USA getting out of the world police business. We have provided a military subsidy to Europe, Japan, and South Korea for more than 50 years. We can no longer afford it ... and they deserve to receive exactly what they wished for, a diminished USA. I say hurray, bring all out troops home, not just from Iraq and Afghanistan but also from Europe, Japan, South Korea, and elsewhere in the world. USA troops deserve to be stationed only in the USA.

6. The United States is badly governed, the victim of 30 years of failed conservative policies. Remember, this is a government which drowned a city of 500,000 people and which denies the theory of evolution. This is the embassy you would expect from right wing politicians who don't have a clue about the real world.

7. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!?!? we just spent nearly a decade being derided, ridiculed and outright hated by europeans...germans in particular (a friend of mine is a dual citizen....he made it clear...Germans hate Americans)..... ...but now down deep they actually admire us and so we are derided for not holding up to their high expectations?!?!?! huh!?

8. The inappropriate reference to the "Ugly American" reveals more about the superficiality of the columnist than anything else. The "Ugly American" was the title of a collection of short stories by Lederer and Burdick. The short story which gave the book its name was about an American who was giving help to a needy society. This American was a beautiful person who happened to be physically ugly... diametrically opposite to what is usually inferred by the misusers of the phrase, who have never read the original.

9. A Nation with a reputation as ugly as the U.S.A's should have an ugly embassy to match its reputation. I'll bet it does have a dungeon for torturing its "enemies" as bush calls them.

10. Seem from the western side the new embassy building with its protruding central tower and long, angled roof looks like an aircraft carrier. How fitting a shape! On the rear, the two top floor have no windows at all, it looks like a derelict bunker. All in all there is just no soaring spirit to it. It is uninspiring and flat. It occupies a prime a spot but just looks care- and thoughtless. Like it were in some non-descript office park. This is no way to represent America in Europe's most important country.
