Let down, again, by L.A. Unified
1.
You couldn't make this stuff up if you tried.
My great grandmother had a Yiddish saying: "when the fish stinks, it stinks from the head." All the administrators that failed to protect the kids that were sexually abused should be sacked, and so should Brewer and Cortines.
2. After ten years of working in this byzantine bureaucracy, where the main mission seems to be to convince the public that they are doing a competent job; all I can say is, you don't know the half of it. The money wasted on a regular basis convinces me that those in charge think they're playing with Monopoly money. They manipulate information, lie and cheat, then blame the teachers for all the ills. and we can only guess at the amount of outright fraud and theft going on without control. As a former business analyst, I am still regularly surprised by the ineptitude demonstrated by those at the top
3. This is the same story that is being played out in every educational institution in America. Overpaid underworked administrators wallowing in air-conditioned incompetence getting raises and bonuses to find ways to 'tighten the budget'. So the more money they take from the teachers and kids, the more money they can give themselves. THIS IS THEIR ONLY REAL JOB. Its true from the kindergarten to the PhD level. I experienced it first hand most recently at CSUSB thanks to Al Karnig.
4. In truth, it seems that the organizations that are having real success in turning around students from high-risk areas are charter schools like KIPP and Green Dot, to name a few. It is true that the mere mention of "charter" in one of these high-risk schools (I work at one) invokes hatred and scathing rebukes. But at this point, given the LAUSD's abysmal track record for grad. rates and security, shouldn't it be looking for the formula that produces some results?
5. Get your facts straight. Rooney was NOT pulled from Foshay Learning Center. The alleged incident with the gun happened after he left Foshay to be AP at Freemont.
6. Wow the public has begun to understand our frustration as teachers. Some district and site administrators are incompetent to say the least, I don't know why or how they were placed in such positions. What this district needs is to reinstate certain requirements to become an administrator. For example you must be a teacher for at least five years. I know of a few who have had less than two years teaching and are now incompetent administrators. It sounds to me that Angulo and his buddy might have had less than two years as teachers. Why don't you check the backgrounds Tim. I bet you will not be surprised!
7. Every allegation? Do you know that a counselor in a school near downtown was jailed over an accusation by a student who was making it up so she didn't have to attend first period, and that it was her word against his? That the union did not want to support this man, and asked him to plead guilty to something he didn't do? The only thing that saved him is that this girl had pulled the same thing back at her junior high? Who protects the teachers when they are being yelled at, hit, or threatened by teenage predators.
8. DavidS, It is in no way true that any parent with means puts their kid in private school. There will always be parents who put their kid in private school regardless of the standards of the public school. There are far more parents who are interested in teaching their kids what democracy really is, and that means supporting the free and public education that these United States provides to all children living here. There is absolutely NO excuse for returning those administrators to the classroom, and it has nothing to do with their contracts. Administrators are not unionized, do not have any union protection, and can be fired.
9. LAUSD should be criticsized for wrongfully letting an administrator with a prior history of molestation and a gun charge back onto a school campus. Most employees of the school district are honest, professional, and care about kids, and some of the best schools in the state and country are part of the LAUSD. The school board has hired two consecutive superintendents with no education experience in a district starving for more focus on student achievement and less on politics. We wouldnt put someone with no military experience in charge of a military unit, or the CEO of a company as the head coach of the 49ers.
10. Hello from Cincinnati, Ohio-- And you think the LAUSD system has problems. Check out CPS. Cincinnati Public Schools. But worst than that our Prosecutor sucks. His name is Joe Deters. As always NICE COLUMN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
