For McCain, the surge is a losing strategy

Discuss Jonah Goldberg's column.

1. I fail to understand why a reputable newspaper like the LAT would publish a column that makes repeated claims about what Americans believe without quoting a single opinion poll. How can Goldberg possibly know what the people think if he doesn't read polls? This column is chock-a-block full of misinformation from the first paragraph to the last. That's apparently what the LAT wants, which is why they publish Goldberg's columns. So long as newspapers like the LAT continue to publish garbage like this, our great nation has no chance. No chance at all.

3. East Coast Observer wrote "…Obama will say: “Look! Things seem to be sufficiently quiet To warrant bringing our troops home…” Umm, wait a sec. Isn’t it McCain who’s claiming the Surge “succeeded” because things got sufficiently quiet? Last I checked, he is saying it, like all the time. So, no, bad-mouthing Obama for working *with* Iraq’s government doesn’t make him the Wizard of Oz. What it does make him is a true diplomat of peace and the type of leader we need. Thanks anyway, Observer.

4. John McCain NEVER called for Rumsfeld to resign. A McCain spokesman acknowledged this week that that was not correct. "He did not call for his resignation," said the campaign's Brian Rogers. "He always said that's the president's prerogative http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/02/15/AR2008021503320.html

5. After fighting all efforts to achieve a semblance of order, Obama will say: “Look! Things seem to be sufficiently quiet To warrant bringing our troops home (in due course)”-- A cynical ploy, but he’s aching to try it. What an Alice in Wonderland quality, history will say, To Obama’s candidacy there was: He beat the formidable witch of the east, And ran as the Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

6. John McCain is a warrior. Not a diplomat, an educator or a healer. That he bombed North Viet Nam and got shot down is not much of a resume to lead America. While I respect his military service and certainly do not condone his treatment as a prisoner, I do not consider that as reason to elect him. Americans must understand that by pulling the military out of Iraq the war is not lost but ended and the rebuilding of the country can begin. The US started this conflict, too many lives have been lost as a result of the illegal invasion and McCain in incapable of starting the healing process with his militaristic attitudes.

7. "Obama, meanwhile, talks about getting out of Iraq as though Americans don't care about honor." Really? Honor? And you call Obama an elitist? This "honor" idea, or any other romantic ideas you have about killing other people, should be absent from any list of reasons supporting our continued occupation of Iraq. I nominate you for the guy who gets to tell moms why their son or daughter died thousands of miles away. I'm sure the fact that they helped the United States of McCain, Bush, and Jonah Goldberg save face. The Yankees don't like to lose either, but they aren't blowing up their batboys to stay ahead.

8. The purpose of the Surge was to help the Iraqis create a stable and unified government. Giving them time to make the critical decisions like oil revenue sharing, power sharing, and integrating the military and police forces. Unification was the objective and the Surge was the tactic that gave them time to achieve that strategy. The tactic worked but the strategy failed because the Shiites have no intention of power sharing. A strategy is doing the right things and the tactics are doing those right things, right. If you are going in the wrong direction, wrong strategy, it makes no difference whether the tactics works or not.

9. You people are bugging. There is nothing about McCain with his constant flip-flopping, changing tactics, and attacking with nonfactual ads that is appealing. That he call his self the author of the surge is just stupid. What part of WE WERE FIGHTING A WAR THAT WE SHOULD NOT HAVE does not communicate to the talking heads? Do you really believe that McCain's talk of authoring the surge give him a free pass? His opinion is in the mud so far as what the American people want. We wanted Osama not Suddam. We have no interest in Obama giving McCain props for his contribution to a war that was not in the peoples interest!

10. If Bush is to be "credited" for "no more 9/11s" then he is also to blame for the first 9/11. He was president for nearly 2 years but Bush & Co ignored all the red flags. In any case, how can anyone believe the US is safer now? Iraq may be "calmer" (only 21 people are being killed there a day, instead of 40 - wow!) but Islamic militants worldwide are stronger than ever. Thousands of Americans and tens of thousands of innocent Iraqis have died (with countless more injured and homeless) due to a war which has only negative value in terms of US security. Anyone who believes the Republicans make the US safer lives in a world of delusion.
