1. I don't believe that the Great American Road Trip is going away. We may not wander as far until we adjust to the new realities of gas, but wander we will. Gas this year, according to AAA, is just $.80 higher than last. A 1,000 mile trip@22 MPG, will cost $37.25 more than last year. Is that a reason to cancel your trip? How about a Starbucks-free week or one less dinner out to make up the difference. You and your family deserve the break. If you are traveling by RV, the increase will be about $60-$70 - but that is more than offset by the economies of RV travel. www.roadtripdream.com for more

2. The only way to really understand this country is to travel across it. Check out "The Americans" Robert Frank's photography book."Easy Rider" dir: Dennis Hopper. Paris, Texas: dir: Wim Wenders. "Vanishing Point" dir: Richard C. Sarafian.

3. How wonderful that Walt Whitman published "Leaves of Grass" in 1900. He died in 1892. On the other hand, what a great poem he wrote. For my family the long travelling in summer was due to the transfer from one Air Force base in one part of the country to a base in another part. Or across the country from CA to SC (with a bloody earache) to catch a plane to Germany. Except for one transfer, we always moved in July. Saw a lot of the country, though.

4. Interesting and inspiring on this, day 2 of a 90 day road trip, living in the back of my '84 Toyota pickup with my two dogs. It needs a new motor -- can get that, plus air conditioning and two old tires for $500! At 50 miles a day around the Rocky Mountain West . . . I can do this!!! thanks

5. Why don't you post my earlier comment as a courtesy to your readers: they should know that you have the wrong publication date for "On the Road." It's 1957 NOT 1951. Or don't you care?

6. On the Road in 1951? Come on dude, it was published in 1957. Budget cut-backs at work.

7. Wonderful essay that brought back many personal memories. In 1964, when I was just 4 years old, my family traveled by car from Poughkeepsie, NY to Dallas, TX and on to Los Angeles, visiting my father and mother's relatives, respectively. Nine of us--two parents plus a friend to help with the driving, and six growing boys--all piled into a Ford stationwagon. Forty-four years later, Dad, the family friend and one of my brothers, have passed, and the rest of us are scattered across the east coast. But we all remember that trip fondly and occasionally wish there was a way to do it again.
