  • I don't think cosmetic surgery should be outlawed like what people have suggested because it was pioneered originally to help people with extreme deformities or those who were into bad accidents. Don't forget that wounded troops from the wars are also benefiting from cosmetic surgeries too to help them regain normalcy. It is because of advertisement targeting not only rich people who could easily afford it but poor people who would go into bankruptcy or take ridiculous loans to obtain an unnecessary surgery.

  • I've dabbled in cosmetic surgery but found that no one really noticed the new boobs or the wrinkle free forehead. It's a hollow well - selling an idea that makes *feel* more attractive. But you cant hide age, and there are so many bad botox faces and terrible tummy tucks walking around that we all know this to be the case.

  • Rosa Brooks wrote the same column, same anecdotes in Slate 2 months ago. www.slate.com/blogs/blogs/xxfactor/archive/2008/06/25/but-a-boob-job-is-an-investment.aspx# Why should I buy the dead tree Times, when authors just recycle stuff they wrote on the intertubes months ago?

  • All TV proudcers and exectives in this country made the beauty look seem important. They put there perverted minds in work and now every dumb person thinks you have to be good looking to be somebody. So I blame them. I hope that more and more people come to terms with themselves and stop being lazy and work out. Put all those plastic doctors out of business, which I don't think will happen.

  • Have we really sunk so low that we have forgotten the concept of the common good? Going to school is making an investment in yourself that will pay you by increasing the total wealth. Getting a facelift is an investment that will pay you by reducing the wealth of the ugly one who gets passed over for the promotion - so the pain and danger to you are net negatives. Viewed purely economically, it is no more moral than theft - perhaps it should be outlawed.

  • Wow, when I saw the headline, I thought this article was a joke. Can't believe the LA Times printed it.

  • Almost made it through one column without taking a swipe at the Republicans. I don't blame you though Rosa, your mother probably didn't spend much time cooing at you.

  • I was looking forward to Rosa's column and so I'm disappointed. I was sure she was going to offer another one of her insightful critiques re the goofiness of the campaign. Rosa, save the cosmetic surgery topics for a slower news period.

  • Why don't people eat better instead - that will make them feel AND look better. Bad times are depressing and you can't look your best if you don't feel good about yourself and life in general. And exercise we need to exercise more and read more good books about the things that help improve both our technical and judgment knowledge.
