Are you out to prove what much of the world thinks, that Americans are completely ignorrant of the geography outside their own neighbourhood?
How can you say that teh Czech republic, a country that not only has no border with Russia does not even have a border with any country that has a border with the contiguous area of Russia containing Moscow (i.e. excepting Kaliningrad).
In any case, why should Russia determine the Czech republic's foreign policy? I thought you at the LA Times disliked imperialism. Oh, sorry, it's only your imagined US imperialism, or the meaningless concept of US cultural imperialism that you dsilike.

"The U.S. also insisted this summer on the deployment of an almost certainly useless missile defense system in Poland and the Czech Republic, virtually on Moscow's doorstep"
Rosa Brooks is confused about the "one inch equals xx miles" disclaimer on her map. To her Poland and the Czech Republic are only 4-5 inches away from Moscow.

"...useless missile defense system in Poland and the Czech Republic, virtually on Moscow's doorstep. "
My God, do you "journalists" (small j) even do any realistic investigating? Missile defense system that has been passing test after test lately. Czech Republic on Moscow's doorstep? That's like calling Houston a suburb of LA...and they don't even share a border.

Wanna bet Rosa Brooks couldn't pick out the Czech Republic on a map??? Being an LA Times reporter I bet she knows the difference between a Butch and a Femme though.
If she and Nancy Pelosi are Cali examples of the advancements of women in what was considered primarily a man's job then to all the millions of competent women of the California...I'm sorry.

Very wise and balanced article. On the contrary to the most of US media that look very biased and hypocritical.
Beduin @ 1:53 AM PDT, Aug 15, 2008
Well, it's seems mrs. Rosa really dont like McCane and Bush jr. , but she talk right about Georgia and Russia. It's obvious that U.S. make some friendly promises to Saakasvili.
Also nearly 70% of ossetians
are citizens of Russia (official POV is 90% but I don't beleive) so, if we will juge impartial, Russia had no choice other than military interference, whe georgians launched massive artillery attack at ossetians.
It was very stupid to think that russians will do nothing, while georgianss kills russian citizens.
Anyway it is game about money and power, and it is not over yet. Will see, will see

everyone and everything surrounding this story seems to be centered on who's to blame for who said what when. Pitifully little focus seems to have been placed on the people of Georgia who have had their lives ruined and who may be subjected to nothing short of ethnic cleansing by a Russian military given a free hand by the supposedly free world. Stop talking about who said what when, and start talking vividly about the consequences of a small, brutal war that everyone seems to have forgotten in the rush to blame someone else.

I take a measure of comfort in that there are some, however few, among us who dare tell it like it truly is. Thank you Rosa Brooks.
