As always, great column! Too bad we in America don't elect smarter, less warlike leaders. The military-industrial complex really has the world in its grip.

This is great!
I'am form Russia and i think you see the truth.
At least, from here motives of the USA are visible so.
The virtual enemy better than "World Terrorism" is necessary to America. :)
And judging by your mass-media Russia will be this enemy. : (
All it is necessary for the American government for this purpose what to support your economy afloat.
I think.
Best Regards.
Russia, Krasnodar.

"Anyone reading the LAT or the smarmy commentary of this wacky Brooks broad for historical perspective on the reemergence of the Russian bear, is bound to be disappointed." How about those of us who are disappointed by your sexism, Tom?

@Rosa Brooks; while I appreciate your satirical response to what is otherwise a fairly frightening situation (those of us who grew up in the 1980s and didn't commit suicide employed this successfully), Vladimir Putin is not to be underestimated. Kennedy is remembered as a hero for his role in the Cuban Missile Crisis, but Kruzchev sacrificed his political carrer to bring a peaceful end to it. But George Walker Bush is no JFK and Vladimir Putin is no Nikita Kruzchev. BTW, Cuba and Venezuela have offered Russia some prime real-estate for their missiles. That makes it sound more like 1962 than 1981.

@Ross Compton; ethnic cleansing is a buzz word that went out with Kosovo. South Ossetians made the same claim of ethnic cleansing about Georgia. Were they lying, simply by virtue of the fact that they're pro-Russia?The fact that Western News agencies (including this one) have been reluctant to report that this whole Russia-Georgia conflict was touched off by Saakashvili's attempt to take South Ossetia by force of arms, is clearly lost on uninformed people like yourself.

This is just the most irresponsible type of thinking that the likes of McCain and his impetuos neocons are behaving. Let there be no question about Georgia initiating this unnecessary provocation and not the Russians. That also happened by the the wink of greenlight given by this administration and McCain through his advisor who is a lobbiest for Georgia, whose President calimed has been talikng on the phone with McCain several times a day.

Just part of a wider plan to ensnare the US in neverending wars and bankrupt it completely, as was also done with the British empire. Certain people absolutely hate Putin because he has tried to stop their illicit activities which have made them enormously wealthy at the expense of ordinary Russians. So they will support sending US troops to the former USSR also. Then, when the backlash comes, their wealth will protect them from any serious repercussions whilst people like me and my family get sent to the chambers again.
