"it would leave Moscow free to use gas as a cudgel to force Western-leaning countries such as Poland and Ukraine into line"
What do you mean by that? Are you implying that Russia asks for certain political decisions in exchange for gas? Because I don't see that. Russia is asking Ukraine to sign the 2009 contract, that's all.

"Russia is justified in demanding that the country move toward paying market price, though Gazprom's contract demands are so excessive that meeting them would leave Ukraine's struggling economy in tatters."
Market price is market price (in Europe m3 natural gas is basically priced at the same level as the amount of heating oil needed to produce the same heat as m3 of natural gas) , what do you mean by "excessive"? That Ukraine is too poor to buy valuable resources? Not Russia's problem. Don't have money to buy product, don't buy it. Its the simple law of capitalism.

So it's wrong for Russia to threaten other countries but it's okay for the US to.
