Contrary to some comments here critizing this editorial, I find it both thoughtful and insightful. Moving in the direction of a global economy, the US needs the right perspective, goals and strategies to succeed. We can't continue to take the view that we can take advantage of the world, and not think that other nations shouldn't be able follow a similar path that serves their interests.

It's convenient for Russia to have its rivals consider it weak. Go ahead, continue thinking that Russian navy is in bad condition and that Russian rockets are covered with rust. Do you realize that no one knows exactly how many nuclear missiles Russia has and where are they located?? Do you know how many mobile Topol-Ms there are in the Russian woods, do you know how many underground missile silos there are? "saber-rattling"? I don't think so.

So if you are not scary, then don't write this nonsense. Why bother?

A very accurate analysis. The "Monroe Doctrine" has been challenged. To handle it appropriately, we should first have a truthful, unbiased analysis of our history and relationship with the rest of the world, and especially the Americas. Maybe it is time to leave the Monroe Doctrine behind and start fresh with South/Latin America, with humility, genuine friendship, mutually beneficial relationship, capitalizing upon our good and strong points. This is not weakness, but may be strategically more correct.

It simply nonsense.
