  • As a former Locke teacher/ coordinator I am glad for the kids and my former co-workers that they see some improvement. Instead of disparagingGreen Dot the district and educators need to learn new ways of reaching students. It is time to stop blaming the victim mentality that paints students of color as unteachable and ignorant. Yet ignores the fact that system is designed to fail by placing poorly trained teachers and staff in a challeging environment with little support. What come across very strongly is that the teachers are happy there and believe in what they are doing. That is not the Locke I remember. Good luck to Cubias and Co!

  • Greendot first started eight years ago and since then they have been doing quite well. Neither does Greendot discriminate student or faculty members because that’s not what they are about. Greendot schools do not picked their students, they take what they get and they make sure they help those students. All faculty and staff members are dedicated to these students and all they care about providing the students with the proper resources to succeed.

  • Grendot schools are among the best schools in California; I would suggest that you see the progress and the achievement that Greendot has been able to accomplish. If Greendot was able to help other communities what makes you think that they will fail Watts; people who say that Greendot will fail is because they have no faith and are not open-minded which probably means that they are high school dropouts themselves. Locke will prevail and all those who said that Greendot couldn’t, well lets just say that they’ll be hating.

  • Why is it okay to have students off task for half a class period? Would you want your child at a school like that? It is sad that this is the reality teachers face in our struggling schools. That is why the best students choose alternatives to schools like Locke.

  • UTLA is the enemy of the people! Give these schools two to three years and the Mayor needs to rally his billionaire buddies to push for merit pay over the Stalinist UTLA. Dead-end and burnt out teachers who use UTLA as a blanket from incompetence and dismissal. We have too many on the LATIMES who underestimate the intellectual potential of the people in South LA.

  • Teachers spend thousands of dollars out of their own salaries to purchase books, basic school supplies, and lunches for their STUDENTS. How many other professions ask you to buy staples, paper, pencils, or dictionaries for the office? What they ask is to be treated like professionals, be paid a salary to live on without a second job, and for someone to clean their classrooms. The former is a luxury few teachers are afforded, but all businessmen and administrators take for granted. Please show some respect. Get educated on the reasons they unionized to begin with. Then, perhaps, your banter will be meaningful.

  • For those of you who union bash, just remember that it was unions who fought for a 40 hour week, meal breaks, insurance, and minimum or living wages for the private sector, too. Teachers unions advocate for supplies, textbooks, small class sizes, safty and health care for STUDENTS. If it were all about the teachers, they would be making more than administrators and wouldn't have to strike for the cost of living increases that the state gives districts to give to their employees, but rarely do without that incepid job action.

  • Welcome to the real world Green Dot. You can not pick and choose your students at Locke as you do at your other campuses. Your test scores will average the same as LAUSD, and it appears the drop out rate will continue. You also have the disadvantage of discriminating against hiring teachers over 35. You don't officially discriminate, 35+ just can't seem to get an interview...They're not as bad and hopeless as you believe, and as they've lived longer, they have wisdom to bring to the table. Good luck to you.
