Immigrants strain our resources

1. I need some money to take care of my family. I know that robbing a bank is illegal, but I just want to support my family! So that means it's ok, otherwise you are all racists. Right?

2. My wife and I just applied for food stamps but were denied because I would not dissolve my retirement fund, despite the fact that I was not vested and would take a huge hit in taxes with a net balance of about 20%. Yet I read in the brochure they gave me, that if I were from another country (legally or otherwise), but my child had been born here, we would both get food stamps AND welfare. How is that logical? I pay taxes, yet the non-tax-paying, law-breaking person gets government assistance for breeding??? How does that make sense? Robert

3. My brother-in-law came to the US ten years ago from Europe to be with my sister. He overstayed his Visa i.e. was "illegal." They spent a fortune on lawyers, etc., so that he could stay here. They eventually married and have two kids. Their 8th wedding anniversary is coming up. I just want to know: where does he apply for his refund for following the rules? Thanks. MG

4. Thank you LA times for this much needed opinion piece. Time for the residents of this state and city to finally have a rational discussion about immigration and it's impact. As for all those out there who cry "racist" everytime anyone dares to talk about the downsides to mass immigration, take heed. If you have to resort to name calling to silence your opposition, your side is in a heap of trouble. Perhaps its time for you open border advocates to stop hating and start thinking. Just like we are doing.

5. As a 4th generation Californian, I am sickened by what my state has become. LA actually used to be a nice city. Any sane person driving on the I-5 today would never say this. It looks like a third world tragedy. I don't find it racist to say that I prefer Portland or Burlington to Mexico City. The first two are lovely ciities and the latter is a disaster for most residents.

6. To call an illegal alien an "immigrant" is a lie.

7. Daryl must not have read all of the comments. Stuff like "Shoot them like they are a mad dog." If that isn't racist, then I don't know what is. I have an earlier comment, that might not label this article racist, but it fuels racist comments as has been demonstrated, so the argument this article poses becomes racist in nature. And it is an opinion column, a flawed opinion, which I have an opinion on.

8. It's too bad that every time someone says something that's not politically correct, they're labeled a racist. This is an opinion column, right?

9. Why do the supporters of this article still claim to not be racist? Some even attempt to justify their comments by saying "Well, my wife is an immigrant, so I can't be racist." Sorry to break it to you, but slave owners were racist and they had kids with their African slaves. The issue here is self-entitlement. Immigrants are people, like you and I, who are entitled not to citizenship, but to water, a necessary element to survive. To claim that they are not is either racist or inhumane, plain wrong.

10. Immigrants don't place a strain on America, illegal aliens do that. There is a huge difference between the two. Its the illegal mexicans/latins who seek welfare, bilingual everything, schools and unpaid medical. Every other immigrant legal or illegal came with a visa, which means they had either money, a skill and/ or an education. Most Illegal aliens are the opposite, no money, no skill and no education. Yet lots of kids, and needs. This country cannot afford these people and should do all we can to send them back to where they came from.
