  • The vast majority of drug users started out to have fun. A drug enhanced experience. Lets drop acid and watch the sun-rise, go to a club, the beach, and the beat goes on. Drugs and spring break, gotta love it. There is bo cure. Ever! Just totaly abstaine. Just say NO! ha ha The same numbers of people are gonna get high no mater what. This ebtire drug thing is a huge joke. The DEA needs to keep it;s funding. How fun that must be for the alpha males to bust druggies and ripping up plants. The pot crop last yeat was 800 million dollars was destroyed by the Feds. No wonder California is in the finical dumpster!

  • Great article. After working with teens with substance abuse and mental health problems, there needs to be a focus on prevention, families, strong networks and treatment that is covered by insurance. I am sorry, but jail doesn't work. Everyone has there rock bottom, and jail may not be that. Also, harm reduction is something to look at.

  • Alcohol and drug problems for some but not all is a chronic disorder similar in course to other chronic disorders (diabetes 2 & hypertension) requiring a personal commitment to a lifestyle change and ongoing support to manage. A large number of individuals who experience drug and alcohol problems recover naturally as did our President. However, for those with considerable personal and environmental vulnerabilities the journey of recovery is lifelong and these folks need ongoing care, access to opportunities and science based interventions. Prison has not worked.

  • If jail works, then why not torture addicts or waterboard them? That should really do the trick, no? Besides, it would bring great pleasure to the self-righteous, self-appointed society-saving drug warriors. Besides, there is a lot of torture experience in government these days that otherwise would go to waste
