Ford introduced seat belts in the 1950's, they did not sell. All CAFE standards did was result in lighter cars and heavier SUV's. Congress raised the CAFE standards to 35 mpg by 2020 but because GM has dropped SUV's the avg mpg will be 35 long before that. Regulation also gave us the ignition disconnect until the seat belt was buckled and ethanol.

Where will the electricity to recharge all of those cars come from on a windless night? The Chevy Volt will have a sticker price of over $40,000.

If we went strictly with free market forces, here is a list of things on cars we would never have gotten because the car industry did not want them: Seat Belts Air Bags Better Gas Mileage (CAFE standards) Catalytic Converters (cleaner air)
