  • If we wish to make our children safer, perhaps we should make it illegal for gays and lesbians to obtain any type of license; drivers, business, parade, marriage, etc. After that, we could eliminate their right to domestic partnerships, rights due process, rights to vote, rights to health insurance and right to work.

  • Our society tolerates divorce, homosexuality, adultery, cohabitation, and all sorts of other behaviors that aren't necessarily ideal. That's all well and good. But our society must be BIASED IN FAVOR OF REAL MARRIAGE because children need both a mother and a father. A mountain of studies have confirmed the troubles that children face when they aren't raised by both parents.

  • The only blight on my wedding day was knowing that my sister and her partner of 10 years weren't yet able to marry, despite having had a child together. I'm so glad that this July I'll be able to stand up for her as her brides matron and witness as she stood up for me. This decision has made me so proud to be a Californian!

  • Legislation on marriage is a slap in the face of seperation of church and state. We shouldn't be varying our taxes based on who's "married" or not or go around dumping additional benefits if and only if a couple of people are "married".

  • Marriage is a creation of religion. That is why it carries all the related judgments. Any religious institution should have the freedom to determine what marriage is for its flock. Since the US ostensibly has a separation between church and state, marriage should be removed from all government legalities and be replaced by whatever the legal definition is for adults legally committed to each other.

  • Marriage is more than a contract. It comes with a plethora of benefits from government at all levels, as well as many employers. I can't claim a dog as a child on my tax returns because a dog is not a child. Similarly, same sex sodomites are not husband and wife by definition and should not be recognized as such nor carry the rewards of society. Marriage is a union of a man and a woman. Has the world gone mad? Do words no longer have meaning? If same sex couples want to contract to cohabit, fine. But it is not a marriage because marriage is between a man and a woman. Bride and Groom, not bride and bride or groom and groom.

  • Glen, my partner and I have been together for more than 12 years. I know of no child that has been harmed by the fact that we’ve been a couple living our lives quietly and happily. The kids in our extended family have never known us as being anything other than a couple. And yet, they are all unharmed, happy, and productive (and straight) young adults today. Also, California has a domestic partnership registry that confers nearly all the same rights that California grants to married couples. So your argument that there is no recognized common law regarding this is false and deceptive. Separate but equal is not equal.

  • Glen Lavy's points about majoritarian decisions may come back to haunt him and his movement if the voters of California reject their amendment.
