  • "So where do these premises lead us when we begin to think about low fertility? ... Do people bother to care about schools, for instance? Playgrounds? The sleaziness of the culture?" - Wait a second, I thought all those programs where put in place "for the children". If a community dose end up having fewer children, it can just cut spending on those programs. Childless households can use the tax savings to pay for their own retirements. There is no net lose, except for the government officials who make a living providing those services. It is a strange logic to say we need to build more children for the sake of the schools.

  • The selfish people are the ones who have kids. Can you imagine how many diapers those people who have multiple births go through in one day? What the heck are they thinking? And what about those families who cram a family of 4, 5, 6 or even 7 in a one or two bedroom apartment? Do you think it's healthy for kids to live like cockroaches? Give me a break...this world is overpopulated and we need don't need "breeders"!

  • I had to stop after one child because it's just too bloody EXPENSIVE TO RAISE A CHILD IN L A, precisely BECAUSE THERE ARE TOO MANY PEOPLE WHO HAVE CREATED A MISERABlE THIRD WORLD ECONOMY. 3/4 the schools, hospitals, public facilities are full of illegals and their anchor babies, so that although my home is/ WAS worth a ridiculous $2 million in Coldwater Canyon, the WeHo Elementary was too poor quality and few kids went knowing English; middle and high schools EVERYWHERE FROM WESTWOOD TO HOLLYWOOD TO BRENTWOOD ARE THE SAME 3/4 ETHNIC, POVERTYPOPULATION and gangs from busing. If life were like in the 50's, we'd all be having 2-3 kids again.

  • After going through a very difficult childbirth, and struggling to find decent child care, I find it amazing that so many people have more than one child.

  • Selfishness? Wow. That’s a revelation indeed. Um, no. Selfishness is having sex without thinking of the consequences, or getting an abortion for the inconvenience of being pregnant, or committing child molestation or rape. Responsibility is abstaining until the parents are ready and exercising of self-control so the planet’s resources aren’t taxed more by reckless reproduction. Procreation isn’t a moral obligation but only truly necessary when the human species is at risk of extinction.

  • Declining fertility rates alone are not the issue, but when combined with baby boomer retirements -- now that's an issue. 82 million will retire and 67 million will enter the workforce behind them. Who will fill the 15 million jobs left vacant by them? Second, who will fill the new jobs that our economy creates every year? Our economy is based on growth and consumer spending -- and when you combine retirements, declining fertility rates and a broken immigration system, then yes, our economy will suffer because business will go to where the labor is -- and right now, that's in other countries.

  • We have plenty of "Breeders" they are called Illegal Aliens. The future of California: Asians will run everything and own everything and Latinos will all work for them for slave wages. There are so many of them being born that there will be an over abundance of manual laborers just like in Mexico today.

  • I think it would be fair to say that some people recognize that the world is already overpopulated and that bringing more children into the world is actually one of the most selfish things you can do in terms of the amount of resources consumed. 50 years ago, the area on which my house was built in Orange was orange groves, and 50 years before that it was wild chaparral. 100 years is nothing compared to how long humans have existed and even less in the natural history of life on earth.

  • You forgot that wealth is the best form of birth control out there. Like the Romans before us, more wealth means less children. We can now have fewer children with a much higher surival rate. So don't worry about a declining birthrate, there are already too many people living in this world!
