NATO and its principal puppeteer is a sick joke.

NATO ran out of mission long ago and has become an ineffective force. Everyone should pick up their coffee cups and lock the door on the way out.

NATO is a paper tiger, some of its members are a disgrace. Thier gov.'s are GUTLESS, refusing to send thier troops to the fight, and the enemy sees this weakness. Europe again is paralysed, not recognizing the threat of islamic fundamentalism. GERMANY, ITALY, SPAIN, BELGIUM have failed NATO. European gov.,s need to spend more of thier GDP on defense, coz this conflict is the beginning of many. The Eastern European nations realize the danger of a resurgent Russia, and if they are counting on NATO, damn I feel sorry for them.

Don't be cynical about other people and nations. The facts are, Russia became a Nazi state if you use any sensible criteria of what fascism is. You want to sacrifice others for the safety of your own house? May not work, Nazi should be stopped well before they enter your home town. Yes, democracy and NATO has lots of problems. Do you know any better?

Meier is right: NATO has been obviated by history. Its stated "raison d'etre" of facing down the USSR no longer exists, and it has proven singularly incapable of adopting a common new mission. It's ironic that the larger it becomes, the more irrelevant it becomes, because it has a requirement for a consensus in order to act, and ibloated membership prevents it from achieving consensus. It is way past time for the U.S. to develop a strategic policy that doesn't rely upon NATO complicity.

Russia is not a threat to Ukraine. Pushing NATO advancement on Russia's broders IS exacerbating the situation. Making allies with the neo-fascist US puppet Saakashvily and supporting him in his latest atempt to wipe South Osetians off from the face of the region, and condemning Russian necessery intervention to prevent / stop slaughtering civilians in Tshinvali IS worsening the situation. Overall it seems that all one has to do to gain a kingly approval and support from the US is to be anti-Russian. This what Mr. Yushenko is doing.

The impotence of the alliance is stupifying. It is time to reevaluate the alliance with an eye toward its disestablishment. With the invasion of Georgia it is clear NATO is a paper tiger. It is time for Europeans to invest in their own defense. We can deal with the Russians. What we can't deal with are pusilanimous Europeans who belittle, insult and bite the trigger fingers of those who would keep them free societies.

"though it is again worth pointing out that Georgians are hardly blameless in all of this" - I hear this again and AGAIN... meh at least look at the facts: http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-65820# http://www.michaeltotten.com/archives/2008/08/the-truth-about-1.php http://www.robertamsterdam.com/2008/08/pavel_felgenhauer_on_russias_p.htm Russians just found the right moment and did what they wanted to do for a long time. Beware - The Evil Empire is BACK!
