L.A. without the LAT

Discuss round two of this week's Dust-Up.

Comments will close after one week.

1. Jay #3: "I love the fact that so many comments are from ultra-conservatives who would like nothing better than to see the LAT die. How did they get here in the first place, they had to read it." LOL. We came from links to it at Patrick's blog (and others', as well). Welcome to the internet, Jay!

2. Rosa brooks, Meghan Daum, Patt Morrison, Tim Rutten, James Rainey, et al. - Instead of writing separate columns this group should just issue a joint communiqué every week. The LAT might be able to find success as a large progressive blog, in the mold of HuffPo. Since the HuffPo writers are not coy about their progressive politics they are obliged to engage contrary opinions head on. This makes the blog more interesting than the Times, which lazily presents one side of every issue as if it were the objective truth without the inconvenience of having to defend it from challenge.

3. I stopped reading the LA Times about 15 years ago and I've never missed it. They are a sloppy, arrogant, insolent bunch. I look forward to the day that they go belly up.

4. The core product.... Snicker. If the Times actually offered "generally reliable, mostly accurate" news, they wouldn't be in the trouble they are in. What you offer is generally baised, mostly left-wing, narrowly focused and unprofessionally written tripe. Conservatives and moderates know you're dishonest far-left hacks. Everyone, even the liberals, know that you're boring (and thus missed out on the Mayor's affair). So, no, you're not going to end up as a "boutique" product, because you don't offer enough to anybody to justify the price you'd have to charge. Oh, and how did we conservatives get here? it's called a link.

5. I think I love the writer of this opinion. You couldn't pay me to read a newspaper like the LAT or NYT that assumes we're all liberal, we all hate Christians and sneer at Wal-Mart. Note to LAT: A free country and freedom of speech mean free for everyone, not just those who agree with you. And LAT, it is NOT okay to make up or mischaracterize stories to prove that you liberals are smart.

6. I was born and raised in Los Angeles. Short of a brief 4 year absence for college, I have lived here my entire life. It is SHOCKING how much LA has changed in the past 20 years! I am sick of the overpopulation, illegals and traffiic. LA is my home and it feels as if intruders have stepped in and taken over. Little by little, the beauty has disappeared. I will miss The Times. Despite the fast pace of technology, sitting down and reading the paper with a cup of coffee, is a little pleasure that reminds me of better days and cleaner times. Good bye old friend. I will remember you fondly and keep you alive in my heart.

7. I love the fact that so many comments are from ultra-conservatives who would like nothing better than to see the LAT die. How did they get here in the first place, they had to read it. For all their protestations, they have no other real source for news. If FOX tv trivia is your bag, go there. I prefer the LAT, NYT and WaPost online. Thanks.

8. The Times is dying because it's an English-language newspaper in a Spanish-language town. Meanwhile, any native English speaker still left living in SoCal has, by this time, absolutely no interest in the Times' daily, nay hourly, pro-illegal alien sob stories and pro-Mexico propaganda. Still you stubbornly cling to your fantasies that your shrinking readership will somehow wake up and learn to love the cultural and linguistic suicide that you seem to so devotely believe in. "I want to commit suicide and I hate you because you don't want to commit suicide too.'

10. Talk about pathetic. Move to Las Vegas and see what journalism is here...a total wreck! In order to know what is happening in the world, you hjave to read The Times (Los Angeles) on the Web. Why, it even gets a jump on local stories at times. The sorry part of it all is that reading newspapers has become a lost art. The internet offers so much more and it is basically free. Maybe we should consider haveing a newspaper class in grammar school. It could easily take the place of the wasted subjects taught now.
