Regarding the above mentioned racial aspect of endorsement: Staubach is a Navy vet, who starred at Annapolis; Elway and Aikman are from Republican-leaning areas of the country. Perhaps there is much more to those endorsements than race....

Another example: the day after the Tampa Bay Rays won the American League pennant, about 5 of their players joined Obama at a rally in Tampa. Here's a link:

Maybe it's going to take some political pressure to get the NCAA to drop its discriminatory BCS championship criteria and go to a national college football playoff.
They do it in basketball, why not football? That might mean conferences would have to give up their conference playoffs, but wouldn't that seem at least fairer than the current system?
