Save the plastic bag? Are you kidding? This is one species we should allow to go extinct. Plastic bags are obnoxious and unnecessary trash. I can get all my groceries in 2 paper bags and then reuse those for carrying my recyclables to the curb.

Excellent, well written article and a good response to a questionable assertion. However, plastic bags don't only end up in land fills. They end up in rivers, streams, lakes and the ocean. The amount of decomposable plastic in oceans has become a major problem with no quick solution.

It's very refreshing to hear someone in print speaking sense. Look objectively at the facts surrounding the bag wars, and it's just silly.
J. Abernathy: you apparently haven't noticed the people promoting reusable bags are in business to SELL those bags - a HUGE market right now. Most reusable bags are polypropylene -plastic - from China - known for ignoring environmental issues. Whole Foods is making tons of cash on reusable bags, and handing out paper bags which are FAR worse environmentally. Reusablebags.com also presents the horrors of bags, and promots the bags they sell. Talk about "capitalistic reasons".

What a joke. Saving the plastic bag? There is enough plastic in the world to wrap around the globe 5 times. Plastic WILL outlive our species, yet this author wants to save it for capitalistic reasons. Get back to reality, sir, and wake to the idea of bringing your own canvas, cotton or nylon bags with you. THAT is the future.

Please, stop the madness. Vote Republican for once, that'll be CHANGE in California. Or, keep voting Democrat and will keep our bloated budget, awful school system, over pensioned state workers, shoddy road systems, etc. Its amazing the government can blow $130 Billion dollars and still not have money to fix roads. Shouldn't infrastructure be a priority? I know, you say schools. CA spends 53% of its budget on the school system. And the return on our money? bloody awful.

Husaah! Finally, a thought of reason in this world of madness called Los Angeles. Aren't Angelinos and Californians tired of being bullied by government wanks? These people are so full of hot air most of the time....but it does affect us! It affects are wallets, too. And once these politicians get on a roll, there's no stopping them. Ban plastic bags, ban two-strokes, ban fast food, ban HFCS, ban tag at school, ban mylar balloons, etc etc. If it can't be banned (smokes, alcohol) tax it excessively.
