Barack Obama

Discuss Jonah Goldberg's column.

1. Jonah, your evidence doesn't match your conclusions. You say, "Obama's merely recycling the liberal cliches of the 1980s, namely that Pennsylvania's "bitter" voters have been duped by "wedge issues" like guns, religion and racial resentment." But this is NOT the cliche of the '80's, its the cliche (because it's true?) of the 2000's and Karl Rove and Bush. Therefore, your conflation of Obama and the '80's falls completely flat.

3. I think on balance a pretty lucid and reasonably written view of the candidate Barack Obama. I don't agree with all his (Goldberg's) views, but I can certainly see how he came to his conclusions with what he has written here. Inasmuch as Obama, professes to end politics as usual in Washington, is there anything in his recent political past, as a Senator, that can reasonably allow us to believe this claim? This not only applies to Barack, but any claim made by any candidate. Just like interviewing for a job, what you say you can do is in many ways substantiated or not in what you have done previously, right?

4. "(Reagan) put a stake in the heart of the Vietnam syndrome and the blame-America-first ethos of the Democratic party." Perhaps Mr. Goldberg can explain why we lost 58,000 U.S. troops in Vietnam?

6. Jonah Goldberg is so far off tract, it is hard to call him just "stupid". He is well beyond that. To say he is morally and intellectually dishonest, only begins ti describe his political rants.

7. Remember that Michelle Obama just now became proud that she is an American. Most of us have been proud to be Americans our entire lives. Could it be that the Rev. Wright has anything to do with this delayed thinking!! Could it be his grandma? I'm sorry , she already under the bus for a previous transgression. The disdain that this couple has for America shows every time they open their mouths. Everything is broken & only they can repair it. Pure liberalism at it"s worst.

8. Asa neocon yuppie, himself, Goldberg should know. The analysis is facile. The irony is that every single neocon making the critique is - you got it - a yuppy and opinion-making elites. To pretend as Goldberg or (Kristol in NYT) does that somehow Senator Obama's analysis is incorrect sociologically is nonsense. Goldberg should be glad he has the privilege of using the prestiguous LAT as a space from which to pontificate. Obama is the epitome of lifting himself up both by his own boot-strap and, to paraphrase MLK, by the content of his character. It tells every American, "Yes, We Can".

9. Jonah Goldberg is just another conspiracy theorist born on the right. “How else could an Obama candidacy be gaining such mainstream support? He's tricked us!” To which we are supposed to reply: “Thank you Jonah Goldberg for uncovering the truth!!!” *pause* (wait for it.... wait for it...) AND that is what we call sarcasm folks. Maybe the electorate is just sick and tired of this country going down the shitter and is ready for *gasp* change!

10. What I saw of Obama on the defensive it that fiasco in PA, was a guy fumbling around looking for a play book. With the mess this country faces why do I want an unvetted neophyte? The real change would be for Mama to take charge. Clinton has been vetted. 230 words
