Free-trade free-for-all risks a fiscal free fall
1.
Just tell me how the importation of 20M illegal aliens from Mexico and Central America has benefitted Americans!!! Oh, yes...Mexico is doing just fine...25B in remittances and a huge increase in their chief export...unskilled day laborers!
Meanwhile, Americans are suffering from lost wages, lost jobs, lost medical benefits, failure of the school system, blight, crime. And we are losing our identity...MUST SPEAK SPANISH if you apply for a job!
Give the shaft to NAFTA!
2. Ruttenw writes: "If this election produces a more far-reaching crackdown on immigrants and undermines public support for free trade, the result would be a hemispheric disaster." --Or maybe Mexico's corrupt ruling class would finally get off its fat ass and figure out how to create a decent society and economy without parasiting off of ours.
3. A comprehensive crackdown on illegal immigration would likely spur higher U.S. wages, lower birth rates (including many fewer "instant citizens" born of illegal parents), lower crime rates, safer roads and less crowded jails, schools and emergency rooms. It would likely lower the cost of California government and education by billions. This is just common sense. How would this spell disaster, exactly? Do you have an example?
4. What a crock of bullsh*t. Illegals are illegals. Deport them all!! Down with Sepcail Order 40. Down with the Mayor of L.A.!! MANDATE E-VERIFY TODAY!! AND OUR UNEMPLOYMENT WILL GO AWAY!! Ranking of States from lowest to highest unemployment: http://www.bls.gov/web/laumstrk.htm 45 NEVADA 5.8 46 MISSISSIPPI 6.0 47 RHODE ISLAND 6.1 48 CALIFORNIA 6.2 48 DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA 6.2 50 ALASKA 6.7 51 MICHIGAN 7.2
5. One other point. Mr. Rutten paints legal immigrants as being sympathetic to those who are here illegally. From my experience, this is far from true. My wife came to this country only about 10 years ago, and she is adamantly against illegal immigration, to put it mildly. My boss is a green card holder and about half of my dozen or so co-workers are here on visas from various parts of the world. Not any among them have suggested that they feel any kinship with those who have come here illegally or believe that they should be given any special privileges or consideration.
6. Why keep using the phrase "comprehensive immigration reform?" Very few LAT readers have yet to realize that this is code for legalization of people who are in the country illegally. The LAT and its writers can of course advocate on behalf of any cause they would like, but it's the newsman's duty to at least speak plainly.
7. Another lame commentary. What a waste of ink. Who is this Tim Rutten? As an immigrant, I absolutely support enforcing our laws. Legal immigration builds this country (as it has done for generations). Illegal immigration will tear this nation apart. Obvioulsy, those in ivory towers or in gated multimillion dollar communities don't have a clue.
8. Good opinion piece but what does Jack Kyser think about the subject?
9. Tim Rutten, do you have any sense of history? Whenever you write another column castigating those Americans who want our immigration laws upheld and advocating amnesty for illegal immigrants, do you remember 1987? That was the year soft-headed liberals like yourself got your way and we granted "a pathway to citizenship" for 3 million illegal immigrants. Now 21 years later that number has swollen to 20 million. See the pattern here? Connect the dots Tim; the more we let in the worse it gets.
10. Stick to movie reviews, you are out of touch with reality.
