1. I wonder if Mr. Cortines is talking about Mayor Villaraigosa appointing him (?). I don't believe the Board Members can do it. But they do whatever they want, regardless. If they cut benefits many people will leave the District. Most of them are there not for the salary but for the benefits. They re-structure the district in an effort to save money but the upper management always remains the same - they move around and some times with higher salaries. I wonder why. It depends of who you know and who you are related to. This is my opinion based on what I know and observe.

2. Reengineer the whole education system. The old mental model is no longer relevant. There is a need for a new education model to drive modern school systems. Schools should not be assembly lines where students go from one work station called grades to another. Teachers are not assembly line workers who use the same “one size fit all” method to teach all students regardless of the student’s environment. Think of students and teachers as humans with human needs and wants instead of cogs in a bureaucratic machine. Prevent teachers from burning-out, for example, a friend worked 33 years in the same classroom teaching the same material.
