Free trade unbound

Discuss U.S. Trade Representative Susan Schwab's comments on trade.

Comments will close after two weeks.

1. Trade deficits aren't trade. Trade is the exchange of goods and services for the same. Importing goods and services in exchange for our money, financial or other assets is simply purchasing. Our low propensity to save shouldn't mean that we ought to sell off our assets and incur mountains of debt until the chickens come home to roost. We should limit trade to just that. We should implement a system trade certificates based on the value of exports and imports as well as a market for exchanging them. No caps other than balance.

2. Look at the trade deficit and the average American can see these trade agreements are wrecking this country. It might be great business for the corporate heads and politicians but the economy of the U.S. is tanking and decent jobs are vanishing. Sneering at Lou Dobbs for telling the truth isn't going to change those facts.

3. The biggest problem with the free trade as practiced by this administration is the lack of credibility they have when they claim they are on our side, and the lack of responsibility they take for their actions. If by their actions any jobs are lost, they are the responsible party, no ifs or but about it. So far, they have lost a lot more jobs than they have created. And no amount of propaganda from them will convince any one otherwise

4. Another piece of US self-aggrandizement. The US has used every trick on the book to pry open foreign markets while protecting its own industries. Very few people outside the US would use the words America and free trade in the same sentence. Shame that US citizens do not know the truth. Read the EU's report on US trade barriers and weep: http://trade-info.cec.eu.int/doclib/docs/2006/march/tradoc_127632.pdf
