Letters: Still thirsty at 4 a.m.?

Re “Bill could extend last call for booze,” March 18

State Sen. Mark Leno’s (D-San Francisco) bill to push back last call for alcohol from 2 to 4 a.m. is a misguided way to raise revenue for bars and restaurants (and, consequently, tax coffers).

Two in the morning isn’t late enough to get sufficiently soused? Do we need more DUIs, drunk driving deaths and accidents?

A 4 a.m. last call would put more hard-core alcoholics on the road just when there are early-morning commuters heading to work.

Leno’s proposal is a wake-up call for Mothers Against Drunk Driving and other advocates to be heard before our highways become even more dangerous.

The bill would allow bars to serve until 4 a.m. How many designated drivers will want to hang around waiting for their drunk friends until then?
