Letters: Not a 405 fan

Re “405 in the rear-view mirror,” Editorial, May 30

The Times calls the years of construction to widen the 405 Freeway a “project to alleviate traffic.” Nothing about this project will alleviate traffic. Adding a carpool lane does not alleviate traffic.

If the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority and Caltrans were forward-thinking organizations, instead of a carpool lane, they would have put light rail down the middle (like the 105 Freeway) or an elevated rail line above the route. This could then hook up with the other rail lines, such as the Green Line near LAX, the Expo Line or rail routes in the Valley.

Instead, we have a freeway that is already obsolete. What an incredible waste.
