Letters: The new McDoctors

Share

Re “Sharing the doctor,” Sept. 17

So some physicians now address patients’ health concerns in group appointments. This mass-production approach may improve physician efficiency, but it seems an inappropriate way to fulfill highly individualized medical needs.

On the other hand, because the McJobs trend has left more and more working Americans with marginal incomes and less access to doctors, perhaps the fast-food form of medicine was inevitable.

Let’s hope the McDoctors approach to healthcare turns out to be more salubrious than typical fast-food meals.

Though group medical appointments may help patients, it seems the doctors reap the bigger benefits. They may be able to increase their billings without increasing the length of their workday. I imagine it would be difficult for insurance companies to detect and question multiple billings for a single appointment.

Sounds like a great deal for the doctors.
